Tom Whalley: For nearly 50 years, woodworking has been a part of my life either as a hobby or as a way to disappear into a world of fascination and creativity. I am inspired by anything that I think could be interpreted with a story told in wood. Woodworking to me has never been simply cutting apart boards and assembling them in a different configuration, but rather opening a piece of wood and looking for opportunities. This is why I was drawn to wood turning (making things on a lathe).
While some projects require some exotic woods from around the world, central Iowa has a wealth of natural woods that provide most of the material for what I like to create. Any piece of wood has the potential for stunning beauty. It is my hope that you share my passion and appreciation for both the art and the natural beauty we’re given through wood.
